The Keeper and the Penalty Taker
Matt Le Tissier & Mark Crossley
Mark Crossley holds a unique place in football history as the only goalkeeper to deny Matthew Le Tissier from scoring a penalty. Le Tissier, renowned for his exceptional penalty-taking skills, took 48 penalties throughout his career and successfully converted 47 of them. His only miss came against Crossley during a match between Nottingham Forest and Southampton on 24 March 1993.
Le Tissier's penalty record is remarkable, with a conversion rate of over 97%, making him one of the most reliable penalty takers in football history. Crossley's save was a significant moment, not only for Nottingham Forest's victory but also for its rarity in the sport.
Crossley employed psychological tactics to increase his chances of saving penalties. He would delay the penalty kick by engaging with the referee and taking his time to get back into position, thereby increasing the pressure on the penalty taker. This approach, combined with his keen observation of the taker's stance and run-up, contributed to his success in saving Le Tissier's penalty.
Matt Le Tissier
Matt Le Tissier spent his entire professional club career with Southampton, earning the affectionate nickname "Le God" from fans due to his remarkable performances. As an attacking midfielder, he was known for his creativity, technical prowess, and goal-scoring ability. He became the first midfielder to score 100 goals in the Premier League and is the second-highest scorer for Southampton, behind Mick Channon.
Le Tissier represented England, earning eight caps between 1994 and 1997.
After retiring from professional football, Le Tissier became a football pundit and worked as a panelist on the Sky Sports show Soccer Saturday until August 2020. He remains a beloved figure in football, celebrated for his loyalty, skill, and contributions to the sport.
